Why You Should Stop Setting Goals

Alright, hear me out for a second. You know how everyone’s always talking about setting goals? “You gotta have goals!” “Set your goals high and never settle!” It’s the mantra of every self-help book, motivational speaker, and Instagram influencer trying to sell you a course on how to crush your goals. I bought into it too, for a long time. But here’s the thing… what if I told you that the whole “goal-setting” thing might actually be making your life harder, not easier?

I know, I know. That sounds crazy, right? But stay with me for a minute.

The Goal Trap: Been There, Done That

A few years ago, I was all about the goals. I had a goal for literally everything: my fitness, my career, my finances. I’d wake up in the morning with my notebook filled with “goals” that I thought were the keys to success. “Lose 10 pounds,” “Read 50 books,” “Make 6 figures,” you name it. My goals were specific, measurable, and oh-so-perfectly structured.

I mean, who doesn’t love a good to-do list? 📋✨

But, spoiler alert: I was miserable. I was obsessed with hitting targets, ticking boxes, and crossing things off my list. The moment I didn’t hit a goal, I’d spiral. The pressure of these “perfect” goals started to feel suffocating, and instead of pushing me forward, it held me back. I became a slave to the idea of success, constantly chasing after this invisible finish line that never seemed to appear.

So, I stopped. I had to. And let me tell you, it changed everything.

The Secret: Systems > Goals

Now, before you grab your pitchforks and tell me I’m anti-goals (I’m not, promise), let me explain. The problem isn’t the idea of having something to strive for—goals can be useful in some situations. The issue comes when you’re putting all your focus on the goal itself and completely ignoring the process. The secret to real, lasting success isn’t in the end goal. It’s in the habits, systems, and actions you build to get there.

Let me break it down for you: Instead of focusing on the destination (the goal), focus on the journey (the systems). When you create habits and systems that work for you, success becomes inevitable, without the pressure of a rigid plan.

I used to get frustrated when I’d set a goal like “Make $100K this year” and realize halfway through that I was burning out and falling behind. But when I started shifting my focus from the goal to the system, things changed. I focused on the habits that would naturally lead to that $100K—things like consistently improving my content, investing in my personal development, and building authentic relationships.

The results? Well, they came. But they came without the overwhelming pressure and self-criticism that used to accompany goal-setting. When you focus on developing habits that push you forward, the outcomes will follow naturally.

Breaking Down the Myth of “Rigid Plans”

Here’s another thing that tripped me up for years: this idea that success comes from a perfectly rigid plan. We’re taught that we need to have everything mapped out from point A to point B. But life’s not like that. The minute you get stuck in a rigid plan, you start to feel trapped. And guess what? That feeling of being stuck creates more stress, more resistance, and guess what? You stop moving forward.

In reality, life is a series of pivots, turns, and unexpected challenges. The sooner you accept that, the more freedom you’ll have to move toward your goals without getting bogged down by them. Instead of focusing on a perfect timeline, focus on flexible systems that allow you to adapt and improve as you go.

I stopped holding myself hostage to the idea of having everything figured out. Now, I wake up every day and ask myself: What habits can I build today that will take me one step closer to the person I want to be? And that feels so much better than obsessing over some arbitrary goal I set months ago.

Letting Go of the Pressure

I know this all sounds a little counterintuitive. After all, we’ve been conditioned to believe that if we don’t set goals, we’re just “floating” through life without any direction. But here’s the reality: You are headed somewhere—you just don’t need to plan every step.

The beauty of focusing on habits is that they allow you to grow and move forward in ways that feel natural, not forced. Every day, you’re putting small pieces together, and over time, it all adds up. You don’t have to put insane pressure on yourself to hit some big goal by a certain date.

If your goal is to get fit, don’t stress over “losing 10 pounds” by next month. Focus on consistently showing up for your workouts. If you want to grow your business, don’t obsess over hitting that revenue target. Focus on improving your skills, building relationships, and putting out consistent, high-quality content. Success will follow—slowly, steadily, and sustainably.

The Real Game-Changer: Enjoying the Process

I know this may sound like a soft, fluffy concept, but trust me, the real game-changer is enjoying the process. You can’t force yourself to get excited about a goal that feels like an obligation. But when you focus on the daily actions that move you forward, suddenly it becomes fun. It’s no longer about hitting a target—it’s about the joy of getting better, growing, and making progress.

When you let go of the need for immediate results, you free yourself up to enjoy the journey. And when you enjoy the journey, you’ll find that you’re moving faster toward your goals than you ever could have imagined while stressing over a rigid plan.

Final Thoughts: It’s All About the Habits

So, here’s what I’m really saying: Stop putting all that pressure on yourself to achieve the goal. Focus on building habits, creating systems, and enjoying the process. You’ll be amazed at how much more relaxed and productive you become when you stop stressing over the finish line and just focus on the steps you need to take to get there.

The secret isn’t in the goal itself. It’s in the habits you build to get there.

And when you make peace with that, everything else falls into place.
